St Andrews University has received a grant of more than £165,000 to help combat infectious diseases.
The money from the Wolfson Foundation and the Royal Society will be used to renovate the St Andrews Multidisciplinary Anti-infective Research and Therapeutics (SMART) Centre, which facilitates the discovery of new antibiotics and their testing against all sorts of bacteria, viruses and parasites.
Experts say there is an urgent need for such breakthroughs with which to treat infectious disease, with more than 13 million lives world-wide currently claimed annually due to infection.
Dr Rebecca Goss, from the University of St Andrews, said: “This award is recognition of the considerable ongoing research in the area of infectious disease and antibiotic drug development across St Andrews.”
Paul Ramsbottom, chief executive of the Wolfson Foundation, said, “Infectious diseases are a serious global issue and UK researchers are playing a key part in the fight against these.
“The Foundation is delighted to be working in partnership with the Royal Society to ensure that scientists in this field have, not only improved, but excellent facilities across the country to enable them to carry out this crucial work.”
