Jail for dealer caught with £3,000 heroin haul at his Dundee home

Jail for dealer caught with £3,000 heroin haul at his Dundee home

A drug dealer caught with nearly £3,000 of heroin at his Dundee home has been jailed.

Stephen McTaggart, 40, a prisoner at Perth, was jailed for eight months after admitting a charge of drug supply at Dundee Sheriff Court.

Police raided McTaggart’s home on Hilltown on October 30 last year and found 39.7g of heroin, with a value of £3,007.

Various other drug-related items were also seized, including two sets of digital scales, a mobile phone and tin foil.

Fiscal depute Isabel Vincent told the court officers attended at McTaggart’s home at 9.30am and he was found at the address, then detained and searched.

The fiscal said: “A bag containing brown powder was found within the accused’s trouser pocket, which later tested positive for heroin.

“It weighed 9.6g and had a value of £750.

“The search continued and another bag of powder was found in the living room, which also tested positive for heroin, weighing 30.1g with a value of £2,257.”

McTaggart was arrested, cautioned and charged and taken into custody.

Solicitor Mike Short, defending, told the court McTaggart had a significant drug problem.

Mr Short said: “Throughout his life drugs have been there. You can see that by his record.

“At one point he was taking as much as 5g of heroin a day.

“He is going to be homeless on his release. It is more likely he will go the right way with support.”

McTaggart admitted being concerned in the supply of heroin, a Class A drug, at Hilltown, on October 30 last year.

Sheriff Alistair Brown said: “Dealing in heroin in Dundee is a serious offence.

“The most recent figures show that, on average, one person in Dundee dies every week from drugs and a great deal of that is from heroin.

“Dundee has the highest drug death rates in Scotland.

“Anyone dealing in drugs is contributing to that, and for that reason I sentence you to eight months in prison.”
