Jail officer attacked by thug in cells

A prisoner repeatedly punched a custody officer who refused to allow him to smoke inside a prison van.

Liam Gorrie, 23, a prisoner at Perth, was jailed for four months for the offence, to follow on from his current sentence.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard Gorrie attacked G4S prison custody officer Martin Gemmell within the cells of the city’s sheriff court building.

Fiscal Depute Sue Ruta told the court Mr Gemmell was transferring prisoners from cells to a custody van on August 16.

The fiscal said Mr Gemmell attended at Gorrie’s cell and Gorrie was instantly obstructive, thrashing out at him.

Gorrie then tried to block Mr Gemmell entering the cell but he forced open the door. Gorrie reached out, grabbed Mr Gemmell by the body and began punching him.

The fiscal said: “Mr Gemmell put his hands over his head to protect it and the accused repeatedly punched him on the back and rear of the head.

“Eventually, another G4S officer came to his assistance and the accused was restrained.”

Solicitor advocate Kris Gilmartin, defending, told the court Gorrie refused to get into the van with Mr Gemmell as he would not allow him to smoke inside the van.

Gorrie admitted assaulting Mr Gemmell by repeatedly punching him on the head and body at cells within Dundee Sheriff Court.
