Dundee draws the crowds at New York Comic Con

Over 100,000 will attend the New York Comic Con.
Over 100,000 will attend the New York Comic Con.

Staff and students from Dundee University have joined the likes of Peter Capaldi and Carrie Fisher at New York Comic Con.

Lecturers, graduates and current students from the university are part of a delegation aimed at boosting the profile of the city’s comics Masters programme to an international audience.

Led by Dr Chris Murray, one of the UK’s most recognised authorities on comic books and graphic novels, and Phillip Vaughan from Duncan of Jordanstone college of art and design, the group is also showcasing work created by students on the course.

The university has built a reputation as one of the best places to learn about comics and graphic novels in the UK, and now hopes to attract more interest from further afield.

Over 175,000 people are expected to attend the event across four days, featuring panels of creators and performers from a range of TV shows, films and comic books.

Dr Chris Murray, who leads the degree programme, said: “At the con we have spoken to lots of people interested in the masters course.

“We’ve also met up with comics legends Dave Gibbons and David Lloyd, and lots of other prominent creators.

“The convention is huge, and everywhere you look there are eye-popping costumes.

“Our aim is to boost the visibility of our unique and innovative Masters in Comics and Graphic Novels. We are also promoting the brilliant work produced by our students.

“This is just an incredible experience and the students and graduates we have with us are loving every minute.”

First launched in 2011, the Masters course allows students to examine the impact of comics on the worlds of art, literature and popular culture.

A PhD in comic studies is also available.

Other attractions at this year’s convention include cast and crew from TV and film hits including The Walking Dead, Ant-Man, Star Wars and Doctor Who.

The con finished yesterday, but the Dundee delegation will remain in New York until Tuesday to hold further meetings and networking sessions.
