VIDEO: See new Dundee striker Roarie Deacon in action as Neil McCann warns he faces a step up

Neil McCann has backed new signing Roarie Deacon to be a big hit in the Premiership.

But the Dundee boss has also warned the attacker he’s making a big step up from England’s National League.

The former Arsenal kid was snapped up from Sutton United earlier this month after hitting 12 goals, often from playing wide, last season.

And Neil believes the 25-year-old will provide a different option to the strikers he already has in the shape of Marcus Haber, Faissal El Bakhtaoui and Rory Loy.

He also knows Deacon will have to work hard to make the transition back to the full-time game after his year as a part-timer with Sutton.

“When I looked at the squad I just felt we were a wee bit lacking in the forward department,” said Neil.

“I felt we needed something different and Roarie brings that X factor. He’s very two-footed but he will have to work because he’s coming from a much lower standard and he understands that.

“Sutton United are part-time but Roarie is a good boy and he was keeping himself going in terms of his in-between-days by going to the gym.

“And in terms of ability on the ball in the final third — my goodness!”

“A lot of boys have a go at Scottish football but it has its own set of demands. I spoke to a very highly-regarded ex-international who worked in England last year and is now in Holland and he was saying the exact same thing.

“Whatever people say to put Scottish football down, it has its own qualities and they include hard work and 100% endeavour.

“And I still believe it has quality as well.”
