Hopes badger evidence will sett off wildlife exploration

This halo of dirt in the snow is evidence that an animal has been about.
It is soil that a badger has shaken from his coat after emerging from his sett underground.
The snap was taken at Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve.
Scottish Natural Heritage reserve manager Tom Cunningham hopes it will inspire people to look out for signs of wildlife when they are enjoying the great outdoors.
He continued, “Recently we suggested that as well as looking around and in the trees when you are out for a walk, it is worthwhile checking the snow or muddy ground for footprints.
“These can reveal a lot about who’s been passing by, where they stopped, what they did and even how long ago.
“This photo shows just how revealing this can be.”
Explaining how the clue was left, he added, “Badgers don’t hibernate and winter is a time to glimpse them as there are no leaves or undergrowth to hide them.”
