Motorists in the Mearns are being reminded of the consequences of drink- and drug-driving after Grampian Police snared 23 drivers in the first fortnight of their Christmas campaign.
Four people were arrested after they were involved in collisions, while a further offender was reported after being spotted by a concerned member of the public.
In total, 20 men and three women were caught by officers as part of a nationwide initiative organised by the Association of Chief Police Officers to reduce drink- and drug-driving over Christmas and New Year.
Chief Inspector Ian Wallace, head of road policing in Grampian, said he hoped this would act as a warning to those considering getting behind the wheel while under the influence.
“These 23 drivers now face unwelcome Christmas gifts in the form of a potential driving ban, a monetary fine and will likely have a drink-driving conviction on their licence for many years to come,” he said.
“They may also face other social consequences, such as difficulties with their employment, facing higher motor insurance premiums in the future and the stigma of being a convicted drink-driver.”
Mr Wallace also said drink- and drug-drivers were putting themselves and other road users at even greater risk considering the severe weather which has gripped the north-east over the past week.
“Driving in the current wintry conditions are challenging enough for sober drivers, so to attempt to drive under the influence of alcohol is absolute folly.
“Drivers should be aware that despite the poor driving conditions, officers are still on patrol looking for offenders despite whatever the challenges the weather may throw at us.”
