Work can continue on an ambitious renovation project in Africa thanks to the fund-raising skills of a Perth woman.
An evening of clairvoyance hosted by Dawn Ann Halliwell has raised more than £1500, which will go towards building brick walls at an orphanage in Kikambala in Kenya.
The sell-out event took in a total of £1507.20, with popular clairvoyant Glad Taylor proving to be an irresistible draw to the crowds at Chaplinz bar in Bridgend.
Dawn Ann said, “We’ve now got enough money to knock down the mud walls and build brick ones. I just want to give a big ‘thank you’ to Glad because without her help, this would never have happened.
“It was a very busy night and very good evening, too.”
This is just the latest in a long line of events organised by the 49-year-old, who has already raised more than £3000 in a bid to give the children at the orphanage a better life.
She was inspired to launch her project after stumbling across the orphanage while on a safari holiday with a friend. As well finding ways to boost funds, Dawn Ann will head out to Africa herself at the end of the month to oversee the work to replace the mud walls with a more solid structure.
“We’ve already managed to lay a new concrete floor for the orphanage, put a door on it and provide the children with mattresses and mosquito nets, she said. “In the future, I hope to be able to put a new roof on the building, too.
“I’ve also been working closely with the pastor to find local building supplies and to find local tradesmen who can carry out the work.”
