Three Tayside Police officers are planning a 1000-mile, 24-hour charity motorbike trip around the UK.

Constables Paul Thomson and Sandy Smart and Special Constable Rab Cumming will join hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts for the event on June 19 in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Rab said the main challenges facing them on the ride, which starts and finishes in Leeds, were “getting lost and completing it in time.”

He said, “Fatigue could be a problem, but we’re all going to stick together, drinks lots of coffee, and I’ll be taking my partner Tracy with me.”

Paul said that as all three riders were ex-forces, they were keen to support the poppy appeal.

He said, “Our colleagues think we’re mad, but we’re looking forward to it. We’re raising money for an appeal we have all been touched by.

“We all attend the parades in November for our colleagues who didn’t make it back.”

The event is organised by the British Legion Riders, who have staged it for the past two years.

Last year 162 riders and nine pillion passengers, a European record, completed the event and raised £33,000 for the poppy appeal.
