Stonehaven open air pool reopens with more lifeguards

Stonehaven open air pool has reopened with more lifeguards on duty “to reassure the public” two weeks after a serious accident forced its temporary closure.

The pool reopened at 10am after Aberdeenshire Council gave the go-ahead.

The attraction had remained closed after being at the centre of a probe when an Aberdeen primary schoolboy was pulled unconscious from the water on June 28.

The pool’s Friends group chairman Mike Robins said: ”We’re delighted and relieved. It’s a mixed emotion, as from our customers’ point of view it has been difficult.

”We’re only open for a short season and it is extremely difficult to come to terms with.

”It was a serious incident and we believe it has been dealt with seriously and the council must be commended for that.”

The attraction was closed so the council and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) could carry out investigations.

Following initial treatment at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, the 11-year-old was transferred to Edinburgh, but made a full recovery and was able to return home a short time later.

The boy, whose identity has not been released, was part of a Ferryhill Primary School outing.

Mr Robins added: ”We now look forward to a change in the weather, hopefully, to encourage people through the turnstile to help us through the last few weeks of the season.”

A council spokesman said: ”The council has now completed its initial investigation into the incident and has carried out a review of procedures.

”We are also continuing to work with HSE as their investigation continues.”’Appropriate procedures were followed’The council’s chief of education, learning and leisure, Wilf Weir, said: ”Following our initial investigation, we believe appropriate procedures were followed.

”In order to reassure the public, we are enhancing the number of lifeguards on duty at the pool. We are also offering continued support to staff.

”We would like to express our thanks to users of the pool for their patience during the period of closure and would like to thank the Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool.”
