Staff at an Angus quarry are celebrating after receiving an award for their commitment to local wildlife.
Bardon Aggregates has been recognised by the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Biodiversity Benchmark scheme for its work at Powmyre Quarry, which is located on the Strathmore Estate at Glamis. The 97-hectare site has provided habitats for species such as the brown hare since 2007 and has also been developed as a wet woodland area.
The Scottish Wildlife Trust also acknowledged the work that the firm had done at Duntilland Quarry in North Lanarkshire, as part of events organised to mark the international year of biodiversity.
Bruce Young, who is the quarry manager at Powmyre, said that people from all parts of the community in and around Glamis had become involved in caring for the wildlife.
He said, “Our site now has bird boxes. Staff monitor and record birds and mammals on site, something which may not have happened had it not been for the benchmark. “Whilst attaining our Biodiversity Benchmark was hard work and time consuming, we feel that the long-term payback of enhancement across Powmyre Quarry and the development of our relationship with our community and external partners more than exceeds the initial investment of time.”
