Commonwealth Games sharpshooter Drew Christie has been named Angus Sports Personality of the Year.
He was one of a host of sporting stars at the Reid Hall in Forfar on Tuesday night for the 15th Angus Sports Awards ceremony.
Drew, of Auchterhouse Country Sports, competed for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, finishing fourth. He is ranked Scottish number one and is in the Great Britain Olympic skeet team.
Other short-listed finalists were cricketer Matthew Parker and pentathlete Louise Helyer.
Clay target shooter Sian Bruce was named Young Sports Personality of the Year after going from a beginner in Olympic skeet to being ranked number one junior lady in Britain and number two senior lady in just under four years. Sian is also the European junior champion for Olympics skeet.
At the same championships she was part of the team which won silver and bronze medals. Sian represented Scotland in the Commonwealth Shooting Federation Championships and returned home with a silver and bronze medal.
This category attracted 18 nominations. The four other short-listed finalists were Kelly Clark (football), Joe Lipworth (swimming), Ryan Watson (motor sport) and previous winner Jonny O’Mara (tennis).
Arbroath United Cricket Club first XI were named Team of the Year. The club won the Scottish National League Division One last year. The other short-listed teams were Webster’s High junior girls’ football team, Arbroath High S4 girls’ netball team and the Tayside Musketeers cadet men’s basketball team.
Coach of the Year was Linda Sim of Angus District Netball Club, who was awarded Netball Scotland’s Junior Coach of the Year in 2010. Lynda established the Angus District Netball Club and has progressed to coach the under-15 girls’ North of Scotland squad. Last year she coached the Arbroath High School under-15 girls’ netball team to Scottish Cup glory.
The other short-listed finalists were Les Couper (rugby) and Marion Durham (swimming).
Debbie Killoh of Tayside Special Olympics won the Sports Personality of the Year for People with a Disability award. She has competed in ten-pin bowling at two national games and one European games. Debbie flew the flag for Great Britain in Warsaw at the European Games and won gold in the individual event, silver in doubles and bronze in the team event, and was the Special Olympics Great Britain torch-bearer.
The other short-listed nominees were Ian Bradford (table tennis) and Duncan Reid (ten-pin bowling).
The Service to Sport award winner was Charlie Lewis of Forfar Farmington Football Club, who has been associated with the club since 1984 and, no matter what the weather, has attended every training session and game armed with his first-aid bag and water bottles for the team.
Charlie is vice-chairman of the club and never misses a meeting. He helps run a fund-raising shop in Forfar, with all the proceeds going to the club, and is also assistant manager of the Forfar Farmington ladies’ team.
The other short-listed nominees were Laura Smith (Special Olympics) and John Anderson (rugby).
Arbroath High School was presented with an award to recognise its outstanding achievements and contribution to sport.
GB Judo’s Euan Burton was guest speaker.
