Campaigners celebrate putting the brakes on speeders in Angus village

The speed limit through Craigton of Monikie has been reduced from 60mph to 30mph.
The speed limit through Craigton of Monikie has been reduced from 60mph to 30mph.

Residents of Craigton of Monikie are celebrating the new speed limit in place through the Angus village following a community campaign.

New 30mph signs have been installed on the section of the B961 running through the settlement.

Angus Council’s communities committee agreed to reduce the speed limit from 60mph last May.

In the past the local authority has said the road does not meet the criteria to be reduced to 30mph due to the number of homes facing the road.

However, discretionary powers were used to adjust the limit after a 220-name petition signed by a member of every household was submitted.

Fiona Gray, chairwoman of Monikie Primary’s parent teacher partnership, which led the campaign, said residents were “absolutely delighted”.

She added: “It is fantastic that common sense prevailed within Angus Council despite Craigton not meeting the official criteria in order to be designated a village.

“We are absolutely delighted that the campaigning, petition and representation at the council meeting have finally overcome a long-standing and important safety concern.”

Mrs Gray said many drivers had acknowledged the new reduction in the speed limit though they were looking for help from police for it to be enforced.

“Residents are still hoping for the temporary placement of the mobile flashing 30mph lights at Craigton as well as an increased police presence in the short-term in order to highlight the change in speed limit to all drivers,” she added.

“There is no doubt the 30mph limit will make it considerably safer for the pupils and locals to cross the busy road to and from Monikie Country Park.”
