Council support means Brechin water slide will be bigger and better than Bristol’s

While Bristol's event was a huge success, Brechin is determined to make even more of a splash.
While Bristol's event was a huge success, Brechin is determined to make even more of a splash.

The Brechin community group behind plans to bring a giant water slide to the town has welcomed financial support from Angus Council.

The local authority’s development and enterprise committee agreed to provide £4,941 to BRAVO for the fabrication of the slide and purchase of dinghies.

The 200m slide will run the length of City Road and be part of the Harley Davidson in the City celebrations on July 12.

Bill Sturrock from BRAVO said: “I’m very pleased that the council are giving us support.

“They understand that we are trying to improve the community and attract people into the town.”

He continued: “We want the materials to be reusable because we don’t want this to be a one off. We want to make sure we can handle the material and store it effectively.”

A similar event in Bristol, which had a 90 metre slide, attracted 96,000 applicants for 320 places.

The BRAVO committee is still discussing whether to sell tickets or run the slide on a first come, first served basis on the day.

“People will have the option to ride on a dingy or a lilo with handles, similar to what they had in Bristol,” Bill added.

“Our course will be longer and steeper than the Bristol event. Everyone will have to wear a crash hat, which will be provided.

“There will be a minimum height of 1.2m for a single rider. Children and adults can go together on a dingy.”

Anyone looking to become involved in the BRAVO group is invited to attend their meeting at the Damacre Centre, on Damacre Road, on June 11 at 7pm.

The council funding includes the purchase of five stalls for use by local voluntary and community groups at events in the town.

Development and enterprise convener Mairi Evans said: “This is a fantastic proposal and all those involved are to be congratulated for their hard work in bringing it to Brechin.

“It’s great that the council has agreed to support the plans it promises to be an exciting event for the whole community as well as attracting visitors to the burgh.

“This is the type of ambitious community project which we are seeking to support through the community grants scheme. We want to hear from anyone in the county who has a great idea for an event.”
