An award-winning Angus brewery could be in line for more sales as it prepares to feature in a beer festival hitting Scotland this summer.

MR Brewery in Kellas will be one of many microbreweries whose products will be on sale in Aldi stores across Scotland as part of the supermarket chain’s annual beer festival.

The event, which has been running for the past three years, starts on Thursday, and organisers estimate it to be worth more than £200,000 to participating breweries.

MR Brewery will go on show with its MR Tea Vicar, a pale amber bitter with “a pleasant balance of malt and hops”.

It will be available for £1.89 during the festival, according to the supermarket chain.

Ross Niven, director at MR Brewery, said: “We are excited to be working with Aldi for the first time on their summer beer festival.

“It will be great to see our beer sold in their stores across Scotland and we hope it is something we can work with them on again in the future.”

MR started brewing in April 2012 and has been steadily growing its cask ale market since. The company’s products are popular among some pubs and retailers across Tayside and Fife but have also reached as far as Newcastle and Nottingham.

MR also won the new brewery of the year prize at the Castle Rock Brewing Awards in February.

Organisers say the supermarket’s summer beer festival will build on the success of its three previous festivals, which generated substantial sales for small Scottish breweries and raised the profile of the industry as a whole.

The festival will also bring together the largest selection of microbrewed beers available to any retailer and will showcase some of the country’s best pale ales.

Richard Holloway, Scottish managing director at Aldi, said: “We have been blown away with the success of our three previous beer festivals and are excited to launch our fourth this summer.

“We have great relationships with the best brewers in Scotland and are delighted to be showcasing their home-grown produce on our shelves.”

Aldi’s Scottish Beer Festival will take place across all of Aldi’s 53 Scottish stores for five weeks, or while stocks last.
