America made up for its Ryder Cup defeat by facing down the world over 18 historic holes of hickory golf in Angus.

And plans have been announced for a Ryder Cup-style tournament in the county next year. Two teams of top hickory golfers met on the fairways of Arbroath Golf Course for the first Grand Hickory Match.

Contested by Team USA and the World Hickory International Select, each team had 16 members and dressed for the occasion. Team USA won the contest 16-12.

Tournament organiser Lionel Freedman said the inaugural team game was a great way to conclude the World Hickory Open, which took place at Montrose Medal and was won by Paolo Quirici of Switzerland.

“The Grand Hickory Match provided the perfect conclusion to our 2013 visit to Carnoustie Country,” he said.

“These hickory golfers enjoyed their time in Carnoustie Country so much, they were keen to stay and play for longer so they came up with the idea of having a Grand Hickory Match at the end of the World Hickory Open,” said Lionel.

“The 2013 Grand Hickory Match will now be the forerunner to the full Ryder Cup-style tournament that will take place following next year’s World Hickory Open, which is being held at Panmure.”
