A teenager has been detained after hurling a torrent of threatening and sexual abuse at a police officer.
David Penman, 19, of Queen Street, Arbroath, repeatedly spat on the walls and doors of the town’s police station before making offensive sexual remarks to a police officer about her family during the incident on June 20.
Penman came to the attention of the police after reacting badly when his age was questioned at the Millgate Bar on the same day.
He was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station, where he launched into the threatening tirade.
He appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Tuesday where he was sentenced to six weeks of detention.
The court heard how Penman previously denied the charge, but CCTV footage had been made available and his plea had changed at the trial diet.
Penman’s defence agent said the teenager consumed about £90 worth of alcohol on the day of the offence, and expressed disappointment in his behaviour.
Sheriff Gregor Murray told Penman that breaches of community disposals for previous convictions had left him with no alternative.
“You are a young man, 19 years old and unemployed, yet somehow managed to spend £90 on drink despite only having £55 of Jobseeker’s Allowance a week,” he said.
“This is your third conviction for aggressive and violent behaviour since 2011.
“The first one you were given 200 hours that was at the top of the scale, but that has not stopped you.
“Secondly, this offence involved a number of significant and disgusting aggravating factors.
“You spat, made sexual remarks and threatened the child of a police officer.
“These are extraordinary issues that I cannot ignore, and there is consequently no alternative to imposing a custodial sentence as there is no way that a supervision requirement will stop you.”
