Arbroath and district is at the beginning of a “very exciting time”, according to its fledgling community council.
The group reformed last month after a two-year hiatus, and has thrown its support behind the project along with residents’ groups.
Arbroath Community Council dissolved in acrimony in September 2013 after “dreadful goings on” began to be reported at meetings up to 10 months previously.
But the new-look group has vowed to get back to business during a crunch period for the town and its surroundings.
Chairman Kevin Smith said: “From the start we have been ‘thrown in the deep end’ with so many new ventures opening up.
“This makes being part of the community council all the more important, as we can work with the public and Angus Council to the benefit of all, for the future of Arbroath and Angus for years to come.
“We have a highly motivated, experienced and dedicated team which makes everything so much easier.”
Mr Smith said the group backs a number of events over the year, including the planned Heroes Parade and Seafront Spectacular, Jutland memorial service, Arbourfest, Seafest, 2016 Fireworks and a possible winter market.
He welcomed plans to redevelop Seaton Park for Showcase the Street, which would help regenerate the area.
Demolition of the “Abbey quarter” has begun and should finish in 18 months.
Additional funding has been made available for the schools project, and the rebuilt Warddykes and Timmergreens will be ready for the summer.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the new primary schools at Hayshead, Muirfield and Ladyloan will be “fantastic, modern buildings that pupils, teachers and the whole community will enjoy for generations to come.”
Mr Smith said he feels the group’s input will again come to be valued in the years ahead.
He said: “We as the community council will continue to back and endorse future projects and planning applications.
“It is good to have the opportunity to become directly involved in local issues again, and to be the route from the community to Angus Council, who we will work closely with to achieve our aims and objectives.”
The next meeting will be on March 1 at the Volunteer Centre, Guthrie Port, at 7.30pm.
