Kris Miller, Courier, 10/12/12. Picture today shows police officers taking part in a search at Ninewells Hospital where a pensioner went missing prompting fears for her safety.

An elderly couple have spoken of their terror after a thug launched a full bottle of booze through the window of their Angus home.

The vandal shattered the peace of the Arbroath pensioners’ Saturday night, showering the living room in an “explosion” of glass which the shocked couple said went “off like a bomb”.

The police have launched an inquiry into the Cliffburn Road incident and hope a public appeal may help trace who was responsible for the dangerous act.

The attack did not result in any serious injury to the couple but left the husband nursing a badly-bruised leg after the missile travelled around 20 feet from the pavement and across the room to strike him in the shin.

Last night a local councillor condemned the bottle thrower and called for the community’s help in catching them.

The couple, in their early eighties, were enjoying a peaceful night watching television when the bottle smashed through the triple-glazed window around 9.50pm.

They did not wish to be identified, but spoke of their extreme shock.

“I was just sitting in my chair when I heard this huge bang. We had no idea what it was,” said the man.

Initially unaware that he had been struck by the bottle, the man rushed to his feet to go out of the house and see if he could catch sight of who was behind the attack.

At the same time, his wife quickly dialled 999. She had been sitting closer to the front window, but miraculously escaped being hurt by flying shards of glass.

She said: “I didn’t know what it was. There was just this explosion and we knew the window had been blown out.

“There was just glass all over the living room, but I couldn’t have been any quicker phoning the police.”

Police are asking anyone with information about the attack to phone 101.
