The Tay Bridge was closed by police while they dealt with a man on the crossing.

Several police cars were in attendance and vehicles could be seen stopped on the southbound carriageway.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that units were in attendance and that the event began at 8:45pm.

The bridge was closed in both directions, and to foot and cycle traffic.

Police resolved the incident positively at 11:01pm and a member of the public was escorted safely off the bridge.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We have resolved the incident at 11pm and the bridge is now reopened to traffic.”

Both lifeboats were called out from Broughty Ferry and could be seen circling the bridge supports.

Thomas Bruin, from Lochgelly, was stopped on the bridge as the incident began just before 9pm.

He said: “There keep bringing up more cars, so something is happening.

“There’s someone on the bridge.

“It’s looking like I might be stuck here half the night.

“I just hope everything gets sorted out and this person is taken away safe and finds help.

“An officer came and spoke to us, so we knew what was going on, but we haven’t had any kind of an update for over an hour.”
