A widow handed over £11,215 to staff in the acute palliative care unit at Ninewells Hospital which cared for her husband.
Trudy McLeay handed over the money, raised largely through a charity ball held in May. The donation included £1700 raised at the funeral of her husband Alasdair in April.
Alasdair had battled against the debilitating motor neurone disease which robbed him of speech and his ability to function normally.
While still alive he supported his wife in her bid to raise money to support the unit, which cares for critically ill patients who cannot be cured.
“Ali had such fantastic care from the unit,” said Trudy. “The whole family got a lot of comfort from the fact Ali was prescribed drugs that allowed him to slip away peacefully without distress.
“He had such distressing symptoms which were alleviated.”
The acute palliative care unit was set up as a pilot site with a substantial donation from a benefactor. It is now becoming firmly established and recently moved to a new site in ward 27 of the hospital.
Senior charge nurse Susan Lundie said that the latest donation would be used to provide extra equipment such as specialist beds for patients and reclining chairs for relatives who may wish to keep a bedside vigil.
“We would also like to develop a quiet room,” said Susan.
Dr Fiona Paterson, a specialty doctor in acute palliative care, said, “We have identified a space we hope to be able to use for families and hope to use part of this donation towards that.”
