One of Dundee’s best-known pubs for football fans has closed after the licensee was declared bankrupt.
The Snug Bar, in the shadow of Tannadice and Dens Parks, has shut its doors after Ronald Adams senior was sequestrated.
The order, granted at the sheriff court, was pursued by Dundee City Council for unpaid council tax of £3797 at Mr Adams home in Cowan Place, Dundee.
During the legal process it was also disclosed he had run up around £25,000 arrears in business rates for the bar, which has been a popular watering hole for football fans for generations, and is frequently packed when Dundee United and Dundee are playing at home.
It is also a meeting place and landmark for visiting fans with its outside lamps in the shape of footballs.
With Rangers playing at Tannadice on Tuesday, there was a stream of thirsty spectators making their way to the premises only to be met by locked doors and a message in the window advising anyone seeking access to contact a firm of insolvency practitioners in Glasgow.
The Courier asked the firm, Wylie and Bisset, chartered accountants, business and tax advisers, for a comment, but there was no reply at the time of going to press.
A spokesman for Dundee City Council said, “A wide range of measures up to and including sequestration as a last resort, are available to Dundee City Council to recover the unpaid debts.”
The progress being made by the brewers in trying to find a new tenant to reopen the premises is not known.
