Student so fed up waiting for Dundee to organise a Hogmanay street party he’s doing it himself

Dundee could have a Hogmanay party in the City Square at the end of 2015 courtesy of a 17-year-old student.

Dylan Gowans, who runs a small events company in the city called Core Concerts, has launched an audacious attempt to see Dundee rival smaller towns like Stonehaven in having a big open-air party to celebrate New Year.

Dylan, an events management student at Dundee & Angus College, says he is fed up with the city having no big street party and has invited some of the city’s “movers and shakers”, including TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, along to a meeting to canvas opinions for Hogmanay 2015.

He said: “I tried to do something this year but nothing happened … too much politics going on and it’s now too late to organise anything.

“So I thought we should just start early next year and hold a meeting to get the opinions of as many local individuals, councillors and business people as possible as a starting point to planning this.”

Dylan will be hosting a meeting at The Shore, 15 Shore Terrace, in January to introduce the idea and discuss ideas.

He has urged all Dundee’s councillors and as many business people as possible, no matter how senior, to attend.

Stressing it is a community rather than business venture, he added: “I would be wanting it to be a community-based event with local bands and as much of a fun occasion as possible.

“Once again I would emphasise that this could be an amazing event for the city and I would love to see them all there.”
