A Dundee schoolgirl has told of her terror at being mauled by a dog in a park.

Eight-year-old Kaitlin Kinmond was rushed to hospital after the staffie-type animal pinned her to a hedge and started biting her.

Kaitlin, a pupil at Rowantree Primary, said: “It wasn’t just scary, it was terrifying. My leggings were covered in flesh.”

The youngster had been returning to her grandmother’s house from her cousin’s home on St Columba Gardens when the attack happened.

She suffered a serious wound to her right leg and bruising to her chest in the attack.

She also has a number of bite marks down the right side of her body beside her rib cage.

Her grandmother Ella Whyte, 61, said the dog reared up on its hind legs and pinned Kaitlin against the hedge, biting her on the ribs. The force of the dog caused the youngster to fall over and it started biting her on the thigh.

She said: “It was terrifying. It was biting her leg and pulling her about. I shouted for help, but there were only young kids about, so they couldn’t do anything.

“I was kicking at the dog and managed to get it to let go but it started biting her shoe.”

Kaitlin is still in pain and doctors have told her to stay off school for two weeks in order to recover.

Kaitlin added: “My leg is the sorest part. I’m using my nana’s walking stick because I can’t bend down.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The dog was seized and taken to Brown Street Kennels.

“The girl was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment.

“Inquiries are continuing and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

In a separate incident in the city, a nine-year-old boy suffered minor injuries when he was attacked by a dog in the grounds of Craigiebarns Primary on Friday evening.
