New speed bumps to protect schoolchildren

The speed bumps in Poplar Drive will cost around £15,000.
The speed bumps in Poplar Drive will cost around £15,000.

Further action will be taken to alleviate concerns over a commuter route that witnesses “horrifying” speeds, according to residents.

Angus Council was contacted over the number of “near misses” involving schoolchildren on Poplar Drive and Silver Birch Drive in the Ballumbie estate, as drivers pass through towards Kellas.

Councillors have approved a set of speed bumps along the former route, which was recommended by council officers after local consultation.

But Murroes and Wellbank Community Council, along with the residents’ association, also aired concerns for Silver Birch Drive due to the school bus picking up and dropping off children at busy times.

Further bumps are set to be installed on Silver Birch Drive after discussion at the communities committee in Forfar.

Members heard people on both streets witness motorists driving “at excessive speed on a daily basis”.

One resident surveyed said: “The speed of traffic around the estate is excessive particularly when there are so many children.

“The speed of traffic coming down Silver Birch Drive towards the round-about is also horrendous.

“I’ve lost count of the amount of near misses trying to exit from Hawthorne Grove as cars do not slow down in fact many accelerate.”

Monifieth and Sidlaw member Rob Murray welcomed the report but he noted that the estate was designed in such a way that cars sped in and out of it.

He said he would like to see a speed bump further back in Silver Birch Drive, before the roundabout.

Councillor Murray said: “It’s been an unfortunately designed scheme in that there is no housing looking on to the road there.

“This perhaps has the effect that people may drive at increased speed.

“I’d like to move the report but also ask that officers investigate a further traffic cushion on Silver Birch Drive, and come back to the committee with recommendation before work goes ahead.”

The amendment was seconded by fellow area councillor Craig Fotheringham, who said work had to be done to increase road safety in the area.

The speed bumps in Poplar Drive will cost around £15,000, with the additions yet to be estimated.
