Rickrolling entrepreneur wants to introduce rickshaw rides to Dundee

These days a lot of people are doing their best to go green, but after a big night out it is often not so easy.

For all that Dundee has to offer, a sustainable kebab or eco-cheesy chips are not usually on the menu.

Now a new business is trying to change all that, offering a unique way home with the green credentials to match.

Adam Gierak wants to set up the city’s first rickshaw business.

The Burnside Court resident has applied for a licence to open his business after being inspired by a visit to London, where more than 150 rickshaw drivers operate.

And, even though it seems more at home in China than Charleston, he says his enterprise is set to make the city greener.

In a report to the city’s licensing committee, Mr Gierak said: “Customers will be safe in the knowledge that their chosen means of transport will not generate any emissions to the environment, and, with a maximum speed of five miles per hour, their journey will be safe and enjoyable.

“My project will be directed at any group of people who want to travel in a unique way. Users will be able to travel freely through the busy city centre, avoiding the bustle of everyday traffic.

“Used as an alternative to public transport, the service will allow visitors and tourists a memorable sightseeing experience.”

Mr Gierak, who is from Poland, plans on starting out with two rickshaws one ridden by himself and another by a second driver.

His rickshaws would go by the name Scottish Eco-taxis, and he says they will offer three types of trip.

Mr Gierak said: “My intention is to offer activities that I have divided in three models by using rickshaws. By offering organised tours, tourists will explore the main places and attractions in Dundee city.

“Secondly, I will also take rental for special events such as weddings, hen parties and any other private hire.

“Along with this, I plan to sell advertising spaces services and brand promotion at fairs, conferences and major local festivals, for companies and advertising agencies, with the possibility to offer a combination of transport and advertising events.”

A decision will be made on the licence application on Thursday.
