Facebook and Yahoo Answers are among the top 10 websites visited by Dundee City Council staff so far this year.

Between January 1 and September 10, the local authority’s employees racked up 29,175,813 visits to Facebook.

Curious council staff also visited Yahoo Answers, where people can ask any question and receive a response, a total of 25,934,496 times.

Mike Romilly, founder of a web and mobile app development company in Dundee, said: “Ten years ago workers would have had just one PC on their desk. Now, people also have devices like smartphones and tablets and they flick between them.”

The figures released by the city council do not specify when the sites were visited.

Facebook was also among the top 20 websites looked at by Angus Council staff.

A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “Staff have access to the internet to carry out day-to-day business.

“However, employees can use the internet for personal use at lunch times or outwith working hours.”

A spokesman for Angus Council said: “Our employees have online access primarily for business use and our services actively use social media to engage and inform customers.”
