A Dundee delivery driver, who stole nearly £2,500 worth of jewellery and belongings from a city home, has been jailed.

Marc Jenkins, 27, of Balgarthno Road, was jailed for 13 months after admitting theft by housebreaking at Dundee Sheriff Court.

The court heard Jenkins had been working as a delivery driver on May 1 when he noticed an open window at a home on Balunie Avenue.

He went back to work and claimed he could not continue his shift as his mother had fallen ill, then returned to Balunie Avenue to raid the home, making off with £2,480 worth of items.

Depute fiscal Muhammad Sadiq said the victims returned home two hours after leaving for town and found several items missing.

“Upon returning home, the victims discovered a white leather jewellery box was missing,” the depute fiscal said.

“It contained a long pearl necklace, diamond ring, lady’s watch, four costume earrings, pearl earrings and necklace and bracelet.

“There was also jewellery missing from a drawer and a laptop and case from a table.

“From the other rooms a man’s watch and two other watches were also missing, along with £40 and 795 euros in cash, and a camera containing photos of a deceased relative.”

The victims called the police, who discovered glove marks on and around the window. They also identified the accused on CCTV as he drove down the street in a white van while wearing white gloves.

Jenkins was traced four days later when police were called to another matter in Dee Gardens.

Items worth £450 were recovered from a holdall after the accused took officers to the loft area of a property.

Sheriff George Way said: “You have broken into houses three times before and elevated yourself to a new level of criminal activity. That has to be marked.”
