A Dundee bus driver is being investigated over claims he was visiting a shop when the bus he was in charge of crashed into railings.

National Express Dundee have confirmed that the driver of the bus, which was carrying six passengers at the time of Monday’s incident on Princes Street, has been suspended pending an internal investigation.

A shopkeeper claims the driver had been in his shop at the time of the incident and ran out of his premises as he was about to be served.

Imran Ghaffar, manager at the Korner Kabin, said: ”He came in and was picking up some Red Bull. I was in the back and heard a bang and thought there was a fight outside or someone smashing up a car. I heard a girl scream and the man ran out of the shop.”

The bus is understood to have struck two cars as it rolled down Princes Street before crashing into railings at around 6.30pm on Monday.

One passenger was treated for minor injuries, while the front of the bus sustained major damage.

A spokesman for National Express Dundee told The Courier: ”We can confirm that there was an incident involving one of our vehicles and that the emergency services attended.

”The driver has been suspended and an internal investigation is being conducted.”

Police arrived quickly and began their own investigation into the matter. Officers conducted a thorough examination of the vehicle before it was removed by a tow truck around 90 minutes after the incident.

Police said the crash is still under investigation.

Inspector Gordon Taylor, head of the road policing unit in Dundee, said: ”Obviously it is still under investigation as to what caused the bus to travel south and collide with the barriers.

”One of the passengers was slightly injured. There will be an examination and an interview of the driver and other witnesses.”
