A 28-year-old man from Dundee has denied throwing flares onto the pitch ahead of Dundee United’s Scottish Cup clash at Stranraer.

Ryan Mulholland appeared at Stranraer Sheriff Court on Monday after being arrested during Sunday’s fifth-round tie.

Five flares were thrown onto the pitch as the players ran out at Stair Park.

Around 200 United fans were in the area where the flares were thrown from.

Some also held up a banner protesting the sales of Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong to Celtic.

A sixth flare was then thrown onto the pitch during play as Nadir Ciftci was through on goal.

However, play was stopped as sand was dumped on the flare to put out the smoke.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Extra police and stewards were deployed into the area where flares were thrown from at this match.

“As a result a 28-year-old man from Dundee was arrested and appeared at Stranraer Sheriff Court on Monday.

“He pleaded not guilty and has been given bail conditions which prevent him attending any regulated football match pending his trial in June 2015.”

The SFA said their compliance officer will study the incident before deciding what action, if any, should be taken against Dundee United.

In 2013 the SFA said it wanted to eradicate the use of flares after they were thrown onto the pitch during the Scottish Cup ties between Albion Rovers and Motherwell and Falkirk and Rangers.

A football fan caught with a smoke grenade during a match between Dundee United and Aberdeen at Tannadice in January 2014 was banned from attending any football matches for two years.

Findlay Duncan from Inverurie was with Aberdeen fans in the Shed end when he was spotted with the pyrotechnic device.
