Girl, 12, charged over incident at Braeview Academy

Police in Dundee have charged a 12-year-old girl over an alleged assault at a school in the city.

The girl is alleged to have entered Braeview Academy, which she does not attend, and attacked one of the school’s pupils.

Police were called to the Berwick Drive school after the incident on Tuesday morning.

The girl was seen by pupils being led away by officers as police cars sat outside the school, and was later charged.

A police spokesman said: “Tayside division can confirm a 12-year-old girl was charged in connection with an incident at a school in Dundee on Tuesday. A report has been sent to the Youth Justice Assessor.”

Education convener Stewart Hunter said security of schools is “paramount”.

He said: “I condemn any act of violence and, once this has been dealt with by the police, we will see what needs to be done to ensure something like this does not happen again.

“Schools are always proactive in trying to ensure security is paramount in schools, and I am sure that Braeview will be doing that.”

North-East councillor Brian Gordon said: “Any incident of this serious nature in the school has to be investigated.

“If there is an incident in the school building, like an assault, then I think that children should maybe get something home with them as an explanation and let parents know that the matter is in hand.”
