A Perthshire racer has swapped his motorbike for a saddle by teaming up with a charity.

Road racer Bryan Allan, from Gilmerton, is training to be a volunteer at the Brae Riding for the Disabled Centre in Dundee.

Bryan and the Brae will be working together closely throughout the year to raise money through his races, including the 2013 Irish Road Race and the Manx GP, where he will be riding the Team Dempster classic 250cc Honda and the Cairngorm Hotel Kawasaki 650cc Super twin.

He will also be making his debut at the famous Isle of Man pre TT and all new Classic TT on both Team Dempster 250cc and 350 cc Honda classic machines.

All the money he raises at the events will go towards buying essential equipment to help the Brae.

A keen horse rider as well as a racer, Bryan said he had been looking at fundraising for a Riding for the Disabled (RDA) centre for a while, but he was so impressed during a visit to the Brae that he decided to stay.

He said: “I think it is a great place and I ended up signing up to be a volunteer.

“It is fantastic what they do with the kids and I have never seen a kid leave without a smile on their face.

“It is a satisfying place to work and I have actually learnt more about horse riding there than I have in my years of riding.”

Bryan has been helping to exercise the horses, as well as carrying out maintenance, and added: “They’ll probably never get rid of me.”

He hopes that his involvement with the charity will attract other racing fans. He has also designed a limited edition badge for all who place a donation of £15 or more, which he will be selling at the races.

Centre manager Mary Sneddon said: “He has been volunteering for about eight weeks and is really good.

“He has thoroughly and totally engaged with what we do and has been a huge benefit to the centre. We think his specially-designed Brae pin badge is great and will help raise lots of money at the races.”

Bryan’s efforts have also attracted support from the Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore, which is helping to collect donations and will be raffling off a weekend for two later in the year.
