Football pundit Jim Spence’s defensive wall was no match for a hit-and-run driver who demolished it.
The stone structure outside the BBC Sportsound presenter’s Birkhill home is thought to have been struck by a white van, before the vehicle made off ”like a bat out of hell”.
Spency later posted a picture of the damage online and invited people to decide whether he should report it to police.
He said: ”I didn’t see it but my wife’s pal phoned this morning to say she watched it happen.
”They reversed into the drive and then screeched away like a bat out of hell.
”She says it was a white van, maybe a transit. Apparently, it almost hit a car as well.
”He’s obviously blootered it because it’s in bits. It’s a real shame because it was a nice wee pillar arrangement.
”It’s been there for 40 years and it really stood the test of time, until now.”
The radio presenter took a photograph of the damage and put it on social networking website Twitter.
He said: ”White van did this to my wall at 7pm last night. My mate saw it. Should driver own up like a man or should I call cops?”
The post prompted dozens of his 22,000 followers to respond.
Paul McGowan said: ”They had a chance to be a man about it at the time but chose to be a coward. Get the police phoned.”
David Brand said: ”Call the police. If the van driver couldn’t be bothered to let you know, or even put a note through your door, they deserve all they get.”
And David Henderson added: ”If he was a man, he’d have owned up by now. Call the cops.”
However, not everyone on Twitter took Jim Spence’s request for advice seriously.
Jim Douglas wrote: ”Footage of the culprit has emerged” alongside a picture of a white van with Chick Young’s face superimposed on the drivers’ window.
Neil Forsyth said: ”Rumours that Humpty Dumpty was spotted running from the scene.”
Spency took it all in good fun, even ‘re-Tweeting’ some of the comments.
He said: ”I can’t believe the response I’ve had. I’ve never seen anything like it. My Twitter account went mad.”
The pundit has since reported the damage to Tayside Police.
”I did call the cops, mostly for insurance purposes,” he added. ”I would have dipped into my BBC Christmas bonus but unfortunately I don’t get one.”
It is understood that officers took a statement from Mr Spence on Thursday afternoon and are now making inquiries.
A spokeswoman for the force said: ”Tayside Police can confirm that damage to a wall at an address in Birkhill has been reported.
”Anyone who has information that could assist police with their enquiries is asked to contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.”
