Raith Rovers’ Grant Murray believes Deveronvale’s showing at Stark’s Park on Saturday could fuel arguments for the introduction of a pyramid system in Scottish football.
While the SFA, SPL and SFA met yesterday to discuss possible league reconstruction, some clubs outside of Scotland’s four senior leagues have called for any new-look set-up to include some sort of mechanism that could open up entry to the senior ranks in future years.
With those discussions set to continue, Murray has praised the likes of last Saturday’s opponents and teams like Turriff United who took First Division Morton to a replay for their efforts at the weekend and admits performances like those could strengthen any case they have for inclusion in a revamped structure.
”They feel that they can compete at different levels,” Murray said.
”Whether because it’s a one-off because it’s a Scottish Cup game, I don’t know, but it’s like us getting drawn in a tie where we’re massive underdogs, because you do lift your spirits and lift your game,
”You do look forward to it and it becomes a huge game for you.
”Whether you can sustain that for a whole league campaign is not for me to call, but you can see where teams like Deveronvale are coming from.”
Rovers welcome Morton to Kirkcaldy in the league tomorrow and Murray is hoping for a sizeable crowd to cheer on his charges.
He said: ”This is the last home game before Christmas, so you want to give the fans a wee present for their Christmas.
”It was very tight at Cappielow last time and one goal won it and the way the game panned out, it always looked like one goal was going to win it.
”We realise it’s going to be a very difficult game but the games against Morton always have been, whether it’s at home or away.”
Midfielder Allan Walker returns from suspension, although Simon Mensing will miss out with a hamstring injury.
