The family of a Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan last year are organising a fund-raising event in Kirkcaldy.

Relatives of Corporal Stephen Walker, known affectionately as Whisky, wanted to do something positive in his memory and are putting on a Rock for Heroes event, taking place at Kitty’s nightclub on February 20.

Kitty’s owner Mario Caira has offered the venue free of charge meaning all proceeds will go to The C Group a charity helping Royal Marines who need support coping with injuries or settling into civilian life.

With live bands, a raffle and auction, the fund-raiser has gathered widespread support from the community, which has helped with donations and prizes.

Mother-in-law Helen Lamont, who lives in Kennoway, said her daughter Leona would travel up from England for the fund-raiser and comrades from the marines would also be attending.

She said, “Leona would like to thank everybody for all their kindness because it really is terrific. Stephen liked music and his sister thought something like this would be appropriate because he liked to have a good time when he was out.

“But he was also a real family man and he loved family gatherings. We wanted the event to be a happy day.”

Mr Walker, who was latterly based at Taunton, was born in Northern Ireland but made Fife his home after marrying Leona. His funeral was held at St Kenneth’s Parish Church in Kennoway.

Mrs Lamont added that Leona had received a lot of support from the forces since his death and had been helped through the past months by a welfare officer.

Tickets for the event at Kitty’s are £10 can be obtained at Styx nightclub in Kirkcaldy or by calling Mrs Lamont on 01333 352766.
