The roars of the crowd may have faded but the legacy of last month’s Ryder Cup continues to resonate in Fife.

More than 100 primary school children throughout the region took part in the Active Schools Ryder Cup Golf Festival.

The event saw P5 children from 18 schools in Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy and Lochgelly descend on the Michael Woods Leisure Centre and take to the indoor links.

Competing in teams of four, the youngsters got to grips with their grip, practised their putting and sharpened up their short game in a series of challenges.

After a day of competition, it was golfers from Markinch Primary who grabbed the glory, closely followed by pupils from Pitteuchar West, Glenrothes.

Councillor Mark Hood said the festival was a fitting way to mark a milestone for Active Schools.

He said: “We’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Active Schools team working to help young people access sports and physical activity in Fife.

“Using high-profile sporting events like the Ryder Cup to encourage youngsters to give it a go themselves is a good way of introducing new sports.

“The youngsters have really enjoyed the festival, which has taught them the importance of good sportsmanship and has been a good way to celebrate their success.

“Festival events like this are also a testament to the good partnerships Active Schools has developed over the last 10 years with local sports clubs and volunteers.”
