Pigeon poo is blighting the lives of people living next to Viewforth High School in Kirkcaldy, according to a resident.

Sean Woods, of Loughborough Road, contacted The Courier to complain that Fife Council’s efforts to keep roosting pigeons out of a redundant Victorian building in the grounds of the high school have failed.

Mr Woods said: “Over the past few years I have attempted to get Fife Council to accept responsibility for the old now redundant Victorian building situated within the school grounds but to no avail.

“They did remove the budlia growing from the walls at one point as a token gesture.

“We have always had a pigeon problem due to the fact that again Fife Council have not maintained the building allowing access for the birds to roost and breed.

“Fife Council did make an appearance last year and blocked of the majority of the entry points. They said the birds would fly off to other pastures.

“This has not been the case and they are now roosting on the neighbouring houses and the old school building, defecating on the public path and blocking the gutters.”

Mr Woods said there was also an issue with the main fabric of the building with loose slates, faulty gutters and budlia growing from walls.

He also expressed concern for the future of a stained-glass window in the main building linked to Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Fife Council school estate manager Dawn Cook said: “We are currently planning a new school on the Windmill playing field site with an anticipated completion date of August 2016.

“Once the new school is complete the old school buildings will be declared surplus.

“Fife Council asset and facilities management service will then manage the disposal of these buildings.

“Any features which are deemed to be of historical value will be dealt with appropriately.

“Meanwhile, we are aware of the pigeons and the mess they are causing.

“We took action last year to prevent them from nesting in the disused buildings.

“We have raised the issue of the birds still nesting in the area with property services who are investigating the matter.”
