A man and a woman were taken to hospital with serious injuries after being assaulted in Glenrothes on Monday night.
The incident occurred on Malcolm Road around 9pm.
Police said the victims, a 38-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, were targeted by their attackers. Robbery is not thought to have been a motive.
They were taken to the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for treatment for serious injuries.
The man has been released from hospital but the woman was still being treated on Tuesday.
Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Community Inspector Joanne McEwan said: “This was a serious incident resulting in a man and a woman receiving significant injuries however I would like to reassure the public that we are pursuing a number of positive lines of inquiry.
“I recognise that incidents of this nature can cause concern within the community but I would like to stress that this was not a random attack and we have no reason to believe there is a risk to the wider community.
“In the meanwhile officers will be carrying out additional high visibility patrols and inquiries in the vicinity of Malcolm Road.”
