Bridge crossing the B921 in Glenrothes where a man died this morning at a rush hour incident.

A Glenrothes bridge from which a man plunged to his death last month will not receive safety improvements.

Fife Council has said that the overpass that straddles the B921 Kinglassie Road meets all current safety standards and will not be altered in the immediate future.

It follows calls for a review of the crossing following last month’s tragedy, when a man died after falling around 30 feet from the bridge.

While police have confirmed that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fatality, the Pitteuchar, Stenton and Finglassie Community Council said that improvements could be implemented.

A spokesman for the group told The Courier: “We still feel that a review is justified.

“The community council will continue to look into it and are listening to what the public are saying.”

Police have never released the identity of the man who fell from the overpass, commonly known as Stenton Bridge.

No other person was said to be injured and no vehicles were involved in the incident, which shocked members of the community.

Used by hundreds of people every day, the bridge connects the large residential area of Stenton with Pitteuchar, the Glamis Shopping Centre and Pitteuchar East Primary School.

Following the tragedy, Fife Council has confirmed that staff inspected the crossing but believe that any safety improvements would be unnecessary.

Ross Speirs, lead professional with Fife Council’s transportation department, said: “We became aware of an unfortunate incident resulting in the death of a pedestrian on September 30.

“While we are not aware of any particular problem at this location from a bridge owner’s perspective, our bridge inspector has visited the site since the incident and has not raised any concerns.

“Although the bridge dates from 1975, the parapet height meets current standards for footbridges over roads.

“Consequently, we would not at this time recommend any intervention here to raise the parapet height.”
