Police warn of ‘ringing the changes’ scam attempt in Fife
ByMichael Alexander
Police in North East Fife are searching for a man who tried to carry out a fraud in Cupar’s Tesco store last week, and are warning he may try the same fraud in other shops.
Sergeant Stuart Oliver said: “The man tried to confuse the cashier by asking to change a large amount of money for other demoninations several times.
“We know this as ‘ringing the changes’ and is designed to get more money back by confusing shop staff. However, Tesco staff recognised this and failed to play his game, so he ran from the shop.
“The man is aged being between 40 and 55 years old, balding and was wearing a black leather jacket. He may have been in the company of other accomplices.
“We believe he or his accomplices may have targeted other shops in the area and people should be aware of anyone attempting to change large amounts of money in such circumstances.
“If they do so, then Police Scotland should be contacted immediately on 101 to report such incidents.”
