Can Courier readers unlock this locket mystery?

As a retired investigative journalist, Cupar man Michael Mulford is no stranger to solving mysteries.

But the discovery of an unusual silver locket in a Fife car park has left the retired Courier, STV and RAF media man somewhat perplexed and he hopes Courier readers can help.

Mr Mulford found the locket in the car park of the town’s Tesco back in March.

But it’s the faded colour picture of a baby inside the locket that makes him think the item must be of particular sentimental value to someone, and he hopes it can be reunited with its rightful owner.

“Tesco had no report of any possible claimant so the locket was handed in to Cupar Police Office,” Mr Mulford said.

“It remained unclaimed for three months, at which point it was returned to me.

“The locket looked like it had been slightly damaged by a vehicle. There was no chain attached to the item.

“The basic description shows a scroll on the front, smooth on the back. Inside, however, is what looks like a fading colour picture of a young child.

“The picture had been roughly cut out to fit the shape available.

“I am very anxious to reconnect the owner of this locket with the item.

“Whoever has lost this must have a sore heart.

“They may not even know where they lost it but I cannot imagine they do not know it is missing.

“At first glance it looked like any other locket. A glance at the item inside left me in no doubt the owner will want this back.

“I am determined to use all my investigative skills to restore this locket to the owner if I possibly can.

“It is very difficult to be certain how old the locket might be and whether the picture is the same age.

“Someone must have a heavy heart at the loss of the locket and picture.

“Children are so precious and photographs like this one capture a moment in time and create irreplaceable memories for those involved.

“I want to hear from the person for whom this locket and photo may be very, very special, or from anyone who thinks they might know.

“This photograph of innocence almost haunts me, which is why I shall follow every possible avenue to restore it to its owner.”
