A living, growing room is to be created in a new green arts project.

ON at Fife Theatres and Arts, which runs theatres on behalf of the local authority, is one of four partners working with Vision Mechanics on the new environmental arts project in Dunfermline.

Green House, taking place in Fife, Glasgow, Edinburgh and West Lothian, was made possible with funding from Creative Scotland and the Big Lottery.

The Green House will consist of four sections a living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom with one room built in each area. Each room will be created through the use of sculpture, plants and vegetables.

In Dunfermline, artists are working to transform the walled area to the rear of the Carnegie Hall theatre into a bedroom inside a willow-framed greenhouse.

Local artist and gardener Billy Caulfield, a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, and has been involved with several community arts projects, will take the lead on designing the interior.

He learned about horticulture from his father, who won several gardening prizes and who has also made a visit to the Carnegie Hall Green House to oversee planting. Currently tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, aubergines, chilli peppers and corn on the cob are among the goodies growing there.

Donations to furnish the interior have included a pink train. Billy is on the lookout for an old-style teddy bear to put in the space, but so far no one has been persuaded to part with their teddy.

Cameras will monitor the development and the Green House installation will also exist, in its entirety, on the Green House website at greenhouseproject.info, where participants and audience members can “pop in” to visit the rooms and view their plantings from near and far.

A Facebook page will provide a further avenue for making contact. The project will culminate with The Feast in September, an event celebrating the harvesting of the Green House.

Participants will be able to invite family and friends to share a meal they have prepared using crops harvested from the room and they will tell the story of their room and its inhabitants.

If anyone would like to take part in the development of the Green House they should contact Gillian Parsons on 08451 555555 ext 402224.
