Three-year drug treatment and testing order for former caddie

A highly-regarded St Andrews caddie whose life “spiralled out of control” after he became hooked on class A drugs faces regular drug tests for three years as he bids to prove he can kick the habit.
Derek Nicholson once commanded top tips as he guided often wealthy clients round some of the world’s most famous golf courses.
However, the 45-year-old’s life now lies in tatters after he got addicted to first alcohol and then heroin.
Nicholson had previously admitted a charge of stealing a jacket from the Tom Morris golf shop in St Andrews on June 21 and of possessing the class A drug (full report here).
Nicholson, of Mayview Avenue, Anstruther, appeared for sentencing at Cupar Sheriff Court on Thursday.
After hearing that Nicholson is determined to beat his addiction, Sheriff Charles Macnair agreed to place him on a three-year drug treatment and testing order but warned the accused he would inevitably end up in jail if he fails to comply.
“I impose this on the basis that you genuinely want to give up,” he said. “If you fail to complete this order then there is only one realistic alternative.”
