John Wilson is set to take over from George Brechin as chief executive of NHS Fife.

Mr Wilson, who is deputy chief executive of NHS Fife Board and chief executive of NHS Fife’s operational division, will take up the position on April 1.

It follows Mr Brechin’s decision to step down earlier this year.

Mr Wilson has worked in NHS Scotland since 1979, moving to NHS Fife in 1985. He has worked in a range of management and executive posts across Fife and has been chief executive of the operational division since 2002.

He has chaired the south east Scotland regional planning group for children’s services and the national promoting attendance and management sickness absence group. He is a member of the Scottish national evaluation committee, the children’s health support group, the national delivery plan implementation group and represents chief executives on the national expert advisory group on neonatal services.

NHS Fife chairman Professor Jim McGoldrick said: ”John Wilson has already proved himself to be both an excellent deputy chief executive and chief executive of NHS Fife operational division.”

Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon added: ”I am delighted to welcome John Wilson into the post of chief executive for NHS Fife and I look forward to working closely with him in the vital task of continuing to improve the health of the people in Fife.”

Mr Wilson said: ”I am delighted to accept this appointment. 2012 marks the end of the 10-year strategy set out by Fife Health Board in 2002. There is more to be done and many challenges ahead and it is by working together that we will make similar advances in the next 10 years and I look forward to being part of that process.”
