A memorial fund established to ensure a popular Fife soldier is never forgotten already stands at well over £1500.
Darren Lackie, who died during a holiday in Portugal, was laid to rest with full military honours in April. The 21-year-old was a familiar face in his home town of Cupar.
A veteran of conflict in Afghanistan, The Black Watch squaddie was described by regimental chiefs as a “brave and tenacious” rising young star.
His life was cut short during what should have been a dream holiday in the resort of Albufeira. The tragedy has inspired people in his hometown to make sure his memory lives on.
Cupar resident Rod Whyte, who set up the memorial fund, said, “A fun weekend raised a staggering £1011. Meanwhile, the Walker Tavern raised £106 through the sale of memorial fund wristbands. They are now on sale in every bar in Cupar priced £2.
“The total fund to date stands at £1582 which is great.”
Next on the agenda is a craft fair in the Age Concern hall in Cupar on June 18. Anyone wanting to take a table is urged to call 01334 653823 after 6pm.
The memorial fund will be used to enhance sporting facilities in Cupar for toddlers up to teenagers. Cash raised could also be spent on a permanent memorial to be located at the Haugh park.
