Sharp increase in complaints about Perth and Kinross Council

Complaints against Perth and Kinross Council have rocketed since a new way of dealing with them was introduced in April last year.

A report due to go before councillors this week shows that the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman (SPSO) investigated 95 grievances about the local authority between April 2013 and March this year. They referred to 327 points of complaint.

In the same period the year before, there were 76 complaints, raising 239 issues. Four cases are still under investigation and 10 have been closed by the SPSO.

A total of 15 cases were upheld, including five about planning issues.

Members of the council’s scrutiny committee will be asked to give their views on the new service has fared.

Members will also be asked to consider complaints specifically about schools.

Between August last year, and June 2014 there were 57 issues resolved at primary schools and 38 at secondaries.

Another 118 complaint points were investigated further, with 27 either upheld or partly upheld.

Committee convener Alexander Stewart said: “If someone feels strongly enough about an issue to make a complaint then it is important that this is resolved, if possible, and that the findings of any investigation are used to make improvements.”
