Crieff drink-driver who hit bus gets long ban

A Crieff woman who “veered” into a Stagecoach bus while almost four times the legal driving limit has been banned from the road for more than two years.

Perth Sheriff Court heard how Sally Ann Wellfare, 38, of Drumlin Dallerie Road, had received an email concerning “distressing” news after she had been at Crieff Hydro’s gym.

She then drove to an off-licence and bought two bottles of wine and proceeded to drink these in her car in the car park of Crieff Visitor Centre and then collided with the bus while driving with no lights on. The court heard she had only passed her driving test in July.

Wellfare admitted on November 13 on Muthill Road, Crieff, she drove with excess alcohol, 138 mics. The limit is 35.

She also admitted on the same date and location, she drove without due care and attention by driving without headlights and crossing a carriageway, causing her car to collide with a Stagecoach bus.

In addition, as part of the community payback order, Wellfare was given 12 months’ supervision and 12 months’ alcohol treatment requirement.

She was also banned from driving for 32 months and will then have to sit the extended driving test after that disqualification.

Depute fiscal Jim Eodanable said: “At 6.20pm, a bus driver on a Stagecoach bus saw the accused was driving in a car with no lights on.

“As her car came towards the bus, it veered into its path but the bus driver was able to take action before the point of impact. Damage to both vehicles was moderate.”

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis told Wellfare she had been “a danger to other road users”.
