A skimming device used to steal bank account information has been found on a cash machine in Perth.
The device was discovered attached to an ATM at the Santander’s High Street branch. It is thought to have been placed some time between 9am on Monday and 4pm on Tuesday this week.
CCTV is being studied and police are trying to establish if any illegal transactions have been made on any personal accounts.
A spokesman said, “It is important that anyone using a cash machine is alert to this particular type of scam and where they notice anything suspicious they should report it immediately to the police, or the bank or store where the ATM is situated.
“Skimming devices are designed to read cash and credit card details without the knowledge of the cardholder. Such equipment is not immediately obvious to the untrained eye as it is often designed to blend in with its surroundings.
“But people should pay close attention and look to see if there is anything stuck in or on the machine. If anything looks out of place, they should not enter their card or PIN but should immediately inform the authorities.”
There have been other reported incidents across the country and the police warn that it is vital that people checks cash machines before using them.
Anyone with information, or who thinks they may have been targeted by the device, should contact police on 0300 111 2222.
