T in the Park site asbestos scare sparks call for probe

T in the Park is to move from Balado to Strathallan next year.
T in the Park is to move from Balado to Strathallan next year.

A potentially hazardous asbestos dump has been unearthed on the new T in the Park site.

The discovery of contaminated land at Strathallan Castle Estate has been seized on by objectors as evidence that scrutiny of the new site has been inadequate.

In response, DF Concerts said they took all environmental issues seriously but the asbestos would have “no effect on our plans for the festival”.

A spokesperson from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa), confirmed they had taken action over the find and will be monitoring the removal of the asbestos waste.

One local resident, who asked not to be named, said the find confirmed their suspicions that the initial survey of the land was not as thorough as they would have liked.

“This adds to the view that Perth and Kinross Council should be requiring DF Concerts to go through full planning and a proper extensive environmental impact assessment before any decisions about moving to Strathallan Castle Estate are made,” they said.

“The screening missed this it said there was no toxic waste. It wasn’t done properly.

“What else have they missed?”

The fact that festival promoters have not been required to apply for planning permission for the move from Balado angered some locals, with an appeal made to Scottish ministers to review the planning process.
