Stornoway man attacked train passenger who tried to protect girls from his drunken advances

A drunken man who pestered two teenage girls on a train and then assaulted a man who told him to leave them alone has been jailed for four months.

Angus MacMillan, 29, of Springfield Road, Stornoway, had moved near the 19-year-old girls and asked if he could sit beside them and have a drink, the court heard.

He first approached them at around 8.15pm.

“The girls said they were happy to be together, but the accused kept returning to a seat near them,” depute fiscal Jim Eodonable told Perth Sheriff Court.

“Then, at 9pm, the complainer boarded at Aviemore and sat quite near the girls.

“After seeing the accused again ask to speak to the females, this 58-year-old man said he should leave them alone.”

The court heard that MacMillan then slapped the man on the back of the head and later went back and punched him on the head and body.

Rail staff phoned the police and MacMillan was met by officers at Perth Station.

He then started swearing at police officers, telling them: “Get these cuffs off me. I want a lawyer.”

Solicitor David Holmes, defending, said his client apologised for his behaviour.

He told the court that MacMillan and a friend were both “intoxicated”.

MacMillan admitted the assault, committed on February 28.

He pleaded guilty to a further charge that on the same date he shouted, swore and threatened violence to police officers.
